Annual maintenance
Why annual maintenance of fire-fighting equipment is mandatory Fire extinguishers usually hang for years without being used. But that doesn't mean
Fires caused by flammable gases such as natural gas, propane, butane and hydrogen fall into fire class C. These fires are particularly dangerous due to the high risk of explosions. A small spark or heat source can be enough to ignite a gas odour.
Gas fires occur regularly in places where gas is used, such as kitchens, workshops, industrial environments and installations with gas pipelines. They are usually caused by leaks, faulty equipment or incorrect use of gas cylinders and accessories.
The first step in a gas fire is to turn off the gas supply. As long as the gas continues to flow, the fire will be fed. Only when the supply is stopped can you effectively fight the fire. These are the correct extinguishing agents:
Powder extinguishers – Interrupt the chemical reaction of the fire and extinguish quickly. Suitable for gas fires, but cause a lot of collateral damage.
CO₂-extinguishers – Work well on incipient gas fires and leave no residue. Less suitable for large or fully developed flames.
Important: never use water or foam extinguishers on gas fires. The heat will immediately vaporise water, which can make the fire worse or unpredictable.
If you cannot turn off the gas supply or the fire becomes too large, leave the premises immediately, warn others, and call 999. Do not open any windows or doors – extra oxygen can increase the risk of explosion.
