Fire class C

Fire class C

Brandklasse C is voor brandbare gassen.

Class C fires involve flammable gases such as natural gas, propane, butane, and hydrogen. These fires are particularly dangerous due to the high risk of explosions. A small spark or heat source can be enough to ignite a gas in the air.

Gas fires are common in kitchens, workshops, industrial settings and installations with gas pipes. They can be caused by leaks, faulty installations or incorrect use of gas cylinders and equipment.

Hoe om te gaan met brandklasse C?

In the case of gas fires, the first step is to turn off the gas supply. As long as the gas continues to flow, the fire will be fed. Once the supply is stopped, the fire can be effectively tackled. These are the correct extinguishing agents:

  • Powder extinguishers – Interrupt the chemical reaction of the fire and extinguish flames quickly. Suitable for gas fires, but cause a lot of collateral damage.
  • CO₂ extinguishers – Work well on initial gas fires and leave no residue, but are less effective on large flames.

Important: never use water or foam extinguishers on gas fires. Water evaporates quickly due to the heat and can worsen the fire.

To reduce the risk of a Class C fire:

  • Regularly check gas pipes and connections for leaks. Use a gas detector or a soap-and-water test to find leaks.
  • Ensure good ventilation in areas where gas is used to prevent the build-up of flammable vapours.
  • Keep gas cylinders and lines clear of heat sources such as open fires and sparking equipment.
  • Have gas installations inspected by a professional and strictly follow safety regulations.

What if the fire spreads?

Is it impossible to shut off the gas supply or is the fire not under control? Evacuate immediately, warn others, and call the fire brigade. Do not try to open doors or windows, as extra oxygen can cause an explosion.
