Q: How many smoke alarms should I install?

Smoke detectors mandatory in existing buildings from 1 July 2022

Since 1 July 2022, it has been mandatory to have smoke detectors installed in every home in the Netherlands. For new-build homes, it has been mandatory for some time (after 2003) to install smoke detectors, but this has now also become mandatory for the existing construction. This applies to both existing owner-occupied homes and rental properties (such as flats). It is the Landlord's duty to create a safe situation. The introduction of the regulation aims to save precious lives. The call to improve fire safety in existing buildings, from the Dutch Fire Service, has grown louder in recent years.

How many smoke alarms should I install?

If you have a multi-storey property, there must be at least one smoke alarm on each floor, from the ground floor to the attic. Fitting only one smoke alarm for the entire building or house is insufficient. In addition, enclosed spaces through which an escape route passes must be fitted with a smoke alarm.

Which smoke detectors are suitable?
