Class A fires include fires involving solid materials such as wood, paper, textiles and some plastics. These are the most common fires in homes, offices and workshops. They often arise from carelessness, such as an overturned candle, an overheated extension lead or a cigarette that has not been properly extinguished.
These fires spread quickly and can cause a lot of damage if not extinguished in time. Fortunately, they can usually be controlled effectively with the right extinguishing agents.
How to deal with Class A fires?
When a solid material is on fire, speed is crucial. The quicker you intervene, the greater the chance of limiting the damage. These are the best extinguishing agents:
- Water – Cools the fire and prevents re-ignition. Caution: do not use on electrical fires!
- Foam – Lays a covering layer over the fire and prevents it from reigniting. Ideal for indoor spaces.
- Powder – Works quickly and effectively, but leaves a messy residue and can damage electronic equipment.
Important: Do not use water on fires involving electrical equipment or liquids. This can worsen the fire or create dangerous situations.
This is how you reduce the risk of a Class A fire
- Keep flammable materials away from heat sources such as candles, fires and cooking appliances.
- Use multi-way adaptors and chargers wisely – overloading can cause overheating and fire.
- Smoke detectors and fire extinguishers in strategic locations – ensure you can intervene quickly if something goes wrong.
- Do not leave electrical appliances on unnecessarily – especially when you are going out or going to sleep.
What if the fire gets out of control?
Extinguishing is only possible if you act quickly and the flames are still small. Is the fire spreading rapidly? Don't hesitate – evacuate and call 112!
