Fire compartment class E

Fire compartment class E

Brandklasse E is a fire classification for materials that have limited combustibility. This means they will not easily ignite and will contribute little to the spread of fire.

Class E was formerly used to denote fires involving electrical installations and equipment. Nowadays this classification is no longer officially used, as an electrical fire eventually develops into another fire class, depending on the burning material.

Electrical fires are most common in server rooms, electrical cabinets, offices, and industrial installations. They often arise from short circuits, overheating, or faulty wiring and can spread rapidly if not detected in time.

Hoe om te gaan met brandklasse E?

In the event of an electrical fire, the first and most important step is to cut off the power supply. As long as the installation is live, the fire will continue to be fuelled and extinguishing attempts are risky. Once the electricity is switched off, the fire can be tackled as a Class A or Class B fire.

The correct extinguishing agents:

  • CO₂ extinguishers – Extinguish without leaving residue and are ideal for electrical equipment and server rooms.
  • Powder extinguishers – Work effectively, but leave behind a fine dust layer that can damage electronic components.

Important: Do not use water or foam on an electrical fire while the power is still on. Water conducts electricity and can create a shock hazard.

This is how to reduce the risk of an electrical fire:

  • Regularly inspect wiring, plug sockets and electrical installations.
  • Prevent overloading of sockets and use suitable cables and extension cords.
  • Ensure good ventilation around electrical equipment to prevent overheating.
  • Install suitable fire extinguishing agents in server rooms and technical rooms.

What if the fire spreads?

If an electrical fire is not immediately under control or the fire spreads to other materials, evacuate immediately and call the fire brigade. Ensure everyone is aware of the procedure for fires in electrical installations.
