Main causes of fire
The 5 biggest causes of workplace fires (and how to prevent them)
A fire in the workplace can cause enormous damage. Not only material, but also operational and personal. Fortunately, most industrial fires are caused by human error or poor maintenance – and are therefore preventable. In this article, we list the five biggest causes and provide immediately applicable tips to reduce risks.
Overloaded plug sockets and extension cords
Many workplaces are cluttered with cables, power strips, and extension cords. This might seem practical, but overloading is one of the most common causes of fires. This is especially true for older installations or when high-consumption appliances (such as heaters or coffee machines) are plugged into the same power strip.
Prevent this like so:
- Use one extension lead per wall socket.
- Do not connect heavy appliances to extension cords.
- Have installations inspected periodically (NEN 3140)
2. Faulty or outdated equipment
A printer that jams, a coffee machine that melts, or a charger that gets hot – these are signs of unsafe situations. Outdated equipment, in particular, poses a risk, especially if the device is left on day and night.
Prevent this like so:
- Replace old appliances in good time
- Switch off electrical equipment when absent
- report defects directly to the responsible party
3. Poor storage of flammable materials
Paper, cardboard, cleaning agents, gas cylinders – flammable materials are present in almost every business. A messy storage area or unsafe storage near heat sources increases the risk of a fierce fire.
Prevent this like so:
- Store flammable materials safely and securely
- Keep storage areas tidy and dust-free
- Do not place materials in front of emergency exits or fire extinguishers
4. Incorrect use of machines and tools
Machines that keep running unsupervised, welding near flammable materials or ungrounded equipment – one mistake can be enough to cause a fire.
Prevent this like so:
- Ensure clear instructions and working arrangements
- train employees in the safe use of machinery
- oversee risky activities
5. Smoking in unauthorised areas
A smouldering cigarette in a bin or next to a gas cylinder can have catastrophic consequences. Nevertheless, smoking incidents are still a cause of many industrial fires.
Prevent this like so:
- Set out a clear smoking policy
- Mark smoke zones with safe ashtrays
- Check regularly for compliance
