Why annual maintenance of fire extinguishers is mandatory (and what happens if you skip it)

Fire extinguishers usually hang around for years without being used. But that doesn't mean you don't need to give them any attention. Precisely because you need to be able to rely on them when it's truly necessary, good maintenance is of vital importance. In this article, you can read why annual maintenance is mandatory and what the risks are if you skip it.

Legal obligation: maintenance at least once a year

According to the law, all portable fire extinguishers must be inspected and maintained at least once a year by a REOB-certified maintenance company. This obligation stems from the Building Decree and the Working Conditions Act, and is intended to ensure fire safety in buildings.

The checks are carried out according to the standards of the NEN 2559 (for portable fire extinguishers) and BS EN 2659 (for fire hose reels). In the absence of current maintenance, the fire brigade may intervene or the insurance company may decide not to pay out for damages.

What is checked during maintenance?

During an annual maintenance check, a certified mechanic will inspect, among other things:

• the pressure and charge of the extinguishing agent
• the operation of the valve and the hose
• the expiry date of the extinguishing agent
• The visibility and accessibility of the device
• or if the extinguishing agent is still suitable for the existing risks

Upon approval, a maintenance sticker or inspection label will be affixed, showing the date of inspection.

What happens if you skip it?

No or incorrect maintenance can have serious consequences:
