Liquid fuel

Wat is een vloeistofbrand?

Fires involving liquids or liquefiable solids, such as petrol, alcohol, solvents, oils, and paint, fall into Class B fires. These fires are dangerous because they can spread quickly and can often form explosive vapours.

Many liquid fires are caused by leaks, spills of flammable liquids, incorrect storage, or ignition by a spark or open flame. The risk of this type of fire is significant, especially in workshops, laboratories, and industrial environments.

How to extinguish a liquid fire.

When dealing with fires involving liquids, it's important to use the correct extinguishing agent. If you choose the wrong one, the fire could spread even faster. These are the best choices:

Foam extinguishers – Form a covering layer over the liquid and prevent vapours from re-igniting. Suitable for petrol, alcohol or oil fires.
Powder extinguishers – Interfere with the chemical reaction of the fire and extinguish it quickly. However, with significant collateral damage and poor visibility as a result, especially indoors.
CO₂ fire extinguishers – Displace oxygen and extinguish without leaving residue. Ideal for laboratories and indoor spaces, but less effective outdoors.

Important: Never use water on flammable liquids. Water can cause the liquid to spread, making the fire grow rapidly.

This is how to reduce the risk of a liquid fire

  • Store flammable liquids safely, in well-sealed and ventilated spaces, far from ignition sources.
  • Use spark-free tools and avoid open flames near these substances
  • Clean up spills immediately and keep the workspace tidy.
  • Ensure suitable fire extinguishers are in logical locations and train employees in their correct use.

What if the fire spreads?

If you're quick, you can often control a liquid fire with the right extinguishing agent. But if the fire is spreading quickly or if there are fumes released that could explode, leave the premises immediately and call 112.
