From 1 July 2022, it will be mandatory in every home in the Netherlands smoke alarms to hang. For new-build homes, it has long been mandatory (after 2003) to install smoke detectors, but this will now also become compulsory for existing buildings. The introduction of this rule aims to save lives. Most fire victims succumb to smoke inhalation.
